The ZScanner 700

The first portable laser scanner.

This state-of-the-art laser scanner helps engineers improve design and inspection throughout the manufacturing process. Connected to a laptop via a single FireWire cable, setup is quick and scanning objects is easy, fast, and accurate.

Self Positioning

The ZScanner® is the first self-positioning scanner on the market. This digital scanner uses the subject part being scanned to establish its spatial reference.

No external tracking or positioning device is needed

The handheld ZScanner does not need an external tracking device like a CMM or measuring arm to establish its location or reference in relation to the object.

Innovative Positioning Targets and Setup

To position itself, the ZScanner uses reflective targets, which are applied to the surface of the part to be scanned and/or the area adjacent to the part. These reflective targets can be quickly and randomly applied. The only other setup involves connecting a Fire Wire cable to the computer, which takes only seconds.

Flexibility of Movement (Free-flowing Movement)

The use of reflective targets allows end users to freely move the object or scanner or both while scanning without losing track of the scanner’s position in reference to the part. This advantage comes in handy for engineers scanning cars or large objects. Since the ZScanner positions itself in reference to the object being scanned, engineers can get in and out of the car to collect all the data they need. The targets are attached to the car’s surface so movements do not affect data quality. It is possible to either scan with the doors open for easy access and to keep all parts or components in the same reference or with the doors closed to compile additional data for ergonomic analysis.

The Technology behind It

During the scanning process, the ZScanner locates and captures the reflective positioning targets in real time. Their respective positions are calculated in reference to the scanner and then recorded. The targets on the object create patterns recognizable by the ZScanner. The patterns defined by the positioning features do not repeat because the targets are applied randomly. This pattern recognition allows the scanner to position itself in the same way that GPS devices use known satellites to establish their position on Earth.
